Prayer

Set the world on fire with your passion and purpose. Don't wait for someone to give you permission because no one has that power over you. You are made of starlight and miracles. You are filled with goodness and sparkles of wonder. Do not hold back. There are messages in your heart that only you can deliver. There is laughter only you can seed. There is love only you can broadcast. Do not let the voices of fear win. Do not believe in lack. Do not believe the illusion of this moment. You are connected with a vast matrix of light. Your intentions and prayers are heard and the Universe is responding. You are just a breath away from gorgeous transformation. Don't give up. Not yet. You're just about to get to the really good parts.

  • Bharatbhai R Pandya True, prayer is the most powerful instrument when all other means fail. I think Vincent Peale says some what similar thing and Dale Carnegie has also listed so many instances wherein the depressed men who had lost courage and will power simply reposed faith in God by prayer and returned to the field, competed, struggled and won their lost kingdoms ! May I give you a simple para at the cost of the space here ? Prayer helps us to put into words exactly what is troubling us Praying , in a way is very much like writing our problems down on paper If we ask help for a problem - even from God, we must put it into words. ----- 2: Praying gives us a sense of sharing our burden , of not being alone. Few of us are so strong that we can bear heaviest of our burdens, our most agonising troubles , all by our selves. Sometimes our worries are of so much intimate a nature , that we cannot discuss them even with our closest relatives. or friends. Then prayer is the answer. Any psychiatrist will tell us that when we are pent-up and tense and in an agony of spirit, " It is therapeutically good to tell some one our troubles . When we cannot tell anyone else,- we can always tell God.----------- 3: Prayer puts into force an active principle of doing . It is a first step towards action. I doubt, if anyone can pray for some fulfillment , day after day, , without benefiting from it. In other words, without taking some steps to bring it to pass. The world famous scientist , Dr. Alexis Carrel said, " Prayer is the most powerful form of energy one can generate. " So why not to make use of it ? Call it Allah, God or spirit, , why quarrel with definitions as long as the mysterious powers of nature take us in hand ? .............. Why not close this book right now , shut the door, kneel down and unburden your heart ? If you have lost your faith beseech All Mighty God to renew it and repeat this beautiful prayer written by Saint Francis of Assisi seven hundred years ago. " Lord, make me instrument of Thy Peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt , faith . Where there is despair and sadness, joy. O Divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood , as to understand; to be loved . as to love; for it is in giving that we receive , it is in pardoning that we are pardoned , and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life " From the book " How to Stop Worrying and Start Living " by Dale Carnegie. The pleasure of the cycle

Why I selected these two photos ? There was a time when the cycle was a luxury , you believe me , luxury. I had no bicycle when I joined the LIC in 1962, I used to go to office on foot, come to home for food in the recess time and return again on foot.I got the cycle from loan of Rs. 200/-- from LIC and the mly instalment was rs. 10. Then I started using this highly luxurious vehicle. limousine ! In the evening my wife would come some times at the office with my eldest daughter and I would put her in the same pinjra as this grand father has put the girl and we would go to garden, shopping etc. Some times on ordinary days, when I put my daughter in the cage, she would start dozing and people would shout " Are bhai, vo ladki so gai hai ! " like this. that was life which i have not enjoyed after so many years though I had police jeep, Ambassador, Fiat and all but the pleasure of that life of cycle has been missing all these years.-----------------From Photography Exhibition, Science hall, Piplod  Surat

Wife of a German General who saved 10,000 soldiers

Friends, We read the story of German Field Marshal Guderin. He wanted to save the lives of 2,00,000 soldiers who were encircled by the Russian forces threatening with greater number of divisions and superior weaponry. Death was certain for them if immediate decision about surrender or evacuation was not taken in time. After Dufferein in Northern France this was greatest tragedy taking shape when large number of soldiers were destined to die at the hands of enemy armed with superior weapons and organisation. Now the fate had taken a turn and the same Germans who killed lakhs of western soldiers were facing imminent massacre themselves .
They were Generals and were deciding life and death of their soldiers or the enemy.
But in this story we are learning facts of a General who was encircled along his 10,000 soldiers and Hitler was not allowing surrender , in other words , he was pushing these soldiers to death.
Meanwhile wife of German General von Dexter came forward to save life of these 10,000 soldiers putting herself in great danger. This is the story of great sacrifice by a woman.
General von Dexter and his courageous wife Aloise
The year was 1944 , when the American, British, and Russian forces were threatening German main land. Hitler had virtually lost the war but was adamant to accept defeat and wanted all German soldiers and officers to lay down their lives for a defeated cause. Some of his Commanders sensing defeat , simply put up a show of resistance , but conducted talks with the advancing Allies for favorable terms of surrender. When Hitler knew such instances , he flew into a rage and wanted to teach a lesson to the surviving Generals in case they ever thought of surrender. For Hitler the lives of soldiers had no value now and it was better for them to die as they had not fought valiantly and so , they should die. Such was his perverted thinking. In fact on 22 March 1944, he ordered destruction of all industrial areas of Ruhr, electricity installations,, water works, gas works and all food and clothing stores before the enemies captured them. His War Production Minister Albert Speer, was so much horrified that he contacted the German Generals not to carry out this order of Hitler. Speer was called by Hitler and as usual gave a long lecture to him, then spoke “ The war is lost , the people will be lost also. It is not necessary to worry about what the German people will need for survival. On the contrary , it is best for us to destroy even these things. For the nation has proved to be the weaker , and the future belongs to the stronger Eastern nation ( Russia )In any case only those who are inferior will remain ( survive ) after this struggle, for , the good have already been killed . “ ( pp 230 Hitler : Military Commander by Rupert Matthews )
Such was the mentality of a dictator who ruled most of Europe .
When the German Armies suffered heavy losses and the war turned tables on Germany, the German Commanders started thinking sensibly and in some cases there were surrenders before the advancing American and British Armies. Hitler wanted to stop this mentality and issued ordinance that stipulated that the families of such Generals, Officers who surrendered or did not put up best efforts , will have to be either shot or sent to Concentration Camps ( labour jails ). In other words the families of the German officers fighting in armed forces were to be regarded as hostages, this order assumed legal sanctity as Hitler was duly empowered by amended Constitution to issue such orders and with its pronouncement, it became law. This was called the Law of Hostages.
General von Dexter’s family composed of 5 members, 1. himself. 2. his wife Aloise, sons 3. Friedrik von Dexter 4. Lothar von Dexter 5. Ernst von Dexter .
Out of these 1. Friedrik , the youngest was killed in El Alamein ( Africa ) 2. Lothar was killed at Stalingrad in Russia and 3. Ernst was killed in Rostow in Russia. So now only he and his wife Aloise remained in the family.
General von Dexter received order of posting at Montravil, on the Belgian frontier on the English Channel coast , he would be Commanding Officer there and Aloise would remain as hostage at home in village.
In military terminology then, this place was designated as fortress and it was expected of the soldiers to live fighting and die there. No escape or surrender. There was no choice , either you get killed or your families are shot.
Hitler had devised another method of spying on the Generals, he posted officers from SS , hard core loyalists as their superiors, and one Grupepenfuhrer Frey was to be his superior.
The German forces numbering thousands were encircled by American army , and there was no hope for them, either be killed in military action or be killed by SS men here , in fact two soldiers who attempted to escape were caught and a court martial held and they were to be shot within hours.
The news of this predicament of the German Army facing massacre at the hands of the Americans was broadcast by radios and papers and Mrs. Aloise Dexter came to know of it as many days had passed after von Dexter had joined duties there. She knew that there was no hope for the encircled army , and her husband could not surrender fearing her safety at home. The options were very cruel and either of them were to be killed and with von Dexter ten thousand German soldiers were also destined to die. In any case he can not attempt escape or surrender but would die fighting for a lost cause .
On the 17th day of the seize, the attacking forces launched a devastating attack , von Dexter was injured .If Dexter was killed his superior Frey was to sacrifice the entire garrison of 10,000 soldiers , he was a true disciple of Hitler and meant business of war well.
A German plane flew overhead and dropped a medal for von Dexter for resisting the onslaught of the American forces and a letter from Mrs. Aloise Dexter. General Dexter was too tired but in the light of a candle read the letter from his wife. It read :
“ My dearest - This letter brings you every good wish and my deepest love , you know you have had during all the years of our marriage. But, dearest, I am afraid this letter is going to add to your unhappiness. I have bad news for you..
“ I shall not be alive when you will receive this letter . I have a cancer . It has not been too bad until recent days but now I cannot go on. Dr. Mohrenwitz has been giving me pills to make me sleep and to ease the pain. , and I have been saving them up .Tonight I have posted this letter I am going to take them all at once. I have made all the arrangements and I know I shall die
“ So I have to say good-by to you , dearest. You have been always the best, the kindest, the tenderest of husbands to me. I have loved you with all my heart . And I have been fortunate to have a husband I could admire and love.
“ Tonight my last thoughts will be of you , always and ever my very dearest . Good-by , darling good-by “
General von Dexter now thought his entire family had been wiped out, there was only wife Aloise and she had also died. Life without her was not worth living , the world had slipped out of his hand. Only darkness remained , death was lurking all around along with all 10,000 soldiers trapped in death jaw.
What to do now ?
Why to sacrifice all 10,000 human beings to satisfy the death wish of a maniac named Hitler ? The war was already lost , but life was still worth living, why to turn thousands of innocent women widows by fighting for a lost war ?
He grabbed his revolver , came out of his bed and barged into a small crypt where the SS Commander Frey and Dexter’s deputy Busse were standing.
He pointed barrel of his gun towards Frey and said,
“ Move and you and you are dead “ “ Busse, telephone General Fussel at once “
Frey said, “ Are you going to surrender ? “
“ Yes “ said General Dexter.
“ But your wife ! Remember her ? “
“ My wife is dead “ said General Dexter.
Frey said, “ But my wife and my children … “ he started moving , his hand was going to the holster of his gun, but von Dexter did not allow Frey to touch the holster and General von Dexter shot Frey twice.
SS Commander Frey who was posted to keep watch over General von Dexter was dead now.
The lives of 10,000 soldiers and German officers were saved with the death of SS Commander Frey. All 10,000 soldiers came out of the shadow of imminent death that night. The same night BBC radio announced the surrender of German garrison at Montavril ,
Hitler camping in East Prussia learnt of this surrender and raved like a maniac as all the men whom he wished dead were now alive .
The Law of Hostage took its course. That night four armed men knocked at the door of General von Dexter , in village Welfenstrausse. The knock was answered by an old lady, who emerged from the house and said,
“ I was expecting you Gentlemen”
She was Aloise wife of General von Dexter.
She showed no signs of cancer , but love for her husband whom she had saved by volunteering to go into concentration camp of the tyrant Hitler. She was a saviour to 10,000 soldiers and their families , she had offered supreme sacrifice for others.

  • Bharatbhai R Pandya Very few of this sort can be found, that much I can say from my limited contact with the art. But friends, what do we see in the paintings of this like ? The first point we may come across would be the timing. Some paintings have taken long time to draw. The painters mention the dates of beginning and completion of the painting. The artist have some pre-viewed plan, for say in old times cameras were not there , but the artists were there. The kings of Europe used to employ painters in their Courts , the artists saw, kept a mental note of the incidents and then posted the incidents on paper or any material available. The paintings of 400 800 yrs we see are of this type and they are invaluable. As the paintings give us the idea how the King looked, what dress he and his courtiers wore, the ornaments, sword, other weapons kept by them or lying near about them give us an idea of the physique, dress code, customs, weaponry, personal or family life, or the life of the general public. ----------- The scenes of the living habitat give us an idea how they lived, in this painting the floor of the house show the people were rather lazy in keeping the floor clean or even, The loom the woman is working on show that for their livelihood, they had to undertake some economic activity in the house itself ( I have seen such sancha in my neighborhood, some 60/65 years ago when an old man was working on the sancha , he dug a pit in the house , sat with legs hanging in order to give push to the string and the sancha would start working.. He had no other tool to sit on , everything was in the house of 12 x 16 ' and that was their personal or family life. and yet they produced children and lived a family consisting of 5/6 persons . that was the social life of an ordinary Indian those days. There was no enough space in the house, -------- We see the happiness or sadness on the faces of the persons painted, see the young girl standing her face suggests that she has no pleasure of life, but the young one seems to be of newly wed and is full of enthusism for life , her dress suggests and the middle age woman seems to eke out livelihood and is busy operating the loom. ---- Such things be marked and studied and when you happen to visit some Painting Exhibition keep a camera with you and shoot such pictures. Even on facebook Ms Munira Surati posts number of such paintings which are lije priceless treasures , such pictures should be saved in the camera , black and white or colored copies should be taken out from Cyber cafes and stored. The artists are not only painting the scenes , they are preserving the history, the old painters are worth historians and so be respected.

Munira Surati on " Love "

LOVE....IT is one of the most desired mental state in the world. we seek it all our lives and seldom get enough. we all have insatiable appetite for it.It creates feelings of the most intense delight, people remember it''s first encounter forever. No other subject has occupied such huge space in our songs, poetry and prose than LOVE.
Without it the infants dies.Without it the adult becomes emotionally misshapen.without it creativity never flourish.
Love exhibit the very best within us, and sometimes the very worst within us.
In short it is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the world.

And now my grand son studies in a top school unlike me ! He is standing second in the first row from the last .

Poverty pushes students forward

The more facilities we gave to the boys, the more they were spoiled. We were not given stitched clothes, in fact my clothes were purchased from second hand footpaths. I got new clothes only either in Janmashtami or Diwali and up to 11 Std my father could not give me uniforms and many times I was driven out of class for not wearing uniform, from where could I ? There was no uniform. But I compensated with shortage of clothes and as DIP I had 24 pairs of civilian and 6 pairs of Police Uniforms ! Unluckily I could not wear some pairs of civilian clothes for a year or so and when at brother officer came for dinner, he was stunned to see the quantity of clothes . I had to say " I am meeting deficit of clothes of my school days." !

My class mate Sham Kawas Mehta

He is Sham Kavas Mehta. We were class mates from 5th to SSC. He met me after 57 years. Since we were close friends, I recognised him immediately. His wife expired 10 yrs ago, one son in USA and another son having psychological problem and is interred in Banglore. He lives all alone. I felt sorry for my dear friend. When we hear the dukhs of others, we feel ours are quite negligible and trifle . He is being looked after by a maid servant and I had a talk with her too.She was trailing behind him. This is called Loneliness when no one is around you to hear you or care for you.Loneliness is not a luxury but a punishment. My dear friend, it kills from within. .
